The Non Invasive Process Known as Microdermabrasion

By Mats Sumellin

Over the years, a skin-care technique named microdermabrasion has grown in popularity. This noninvasive treatment is painless, and most of all, affordable. For people who don't wish to have more serious plastic surgery, or injections and laser options, this is a choice that makes sense.

Microdermabrasion can soften fine lines and wrinkles, decrease pore size, help smooth coarsely textured skin, reduce superficial hyper-pigmentation (age spots), and decrease the appearance of scarring. After the process is completed, skin will be able to allow creams to go deeper to have more of an effect to make skin look younger, by promoting the creation of collagen.

This procedure uses specialized equipment to exfoliate the skin. This will result in the removal of dead skin cells that have accumulated on the top layer of the skin.

The crystal microdermabrasion device consists of a compressor that draws in air through a hand-held wand. A vacuum is produced as the wand makes contact with a patient's skin. While the directed aluminum oxide crystals move over the skin, dead skin cells are dislodged during the process. A separate tube on the wand simply sucks the air along with the dead skin cells and crystals into the machine.

Diamond-tip microdermabrasion uses the same vacuum technology and hand-held wand, but there aren't any crystals moving through the tip. Similarly, a vacuum is used but this time, the diamond tip does the work of dislodging the dead skin cells. Depending on the condition and type of the patient's skin, the specific type of tip is chosen. The discomfort is slightly increased for a patient using diamond-tips, however, crystal microdermabrasion has the same effect. It is also usually better for sensitive skin.

The effects of this process are already very striking, and if the technician is skilled and experienced, it is even better. For skin that is rougher, more treatments will be required for the desired effect, and in most cases several treatments are necessary. Depending on the results that you want, your skin's overall condition, the issues that are present and your response to the first treatment a plan of care can be structured. Patients in many cases are delighted after they see the effects that the first session brings, but for a comprehensive treatment for all skin concerns, more visits are usually necessary. For the treatments to provide long lasting results, every few months a session should be scheduled. An expert treatment provider will know how to set up the equipment in the proper way, according to the skin type, so that patients with overly sensitive skin can also take advantage of this technique.

Side effects do result at times from microdermabrasion, although they are usually minimal from this non-surgical treatment. As mentioned, the microdermabrasion treatment sandblasts the skin which will slightly traumatize it and create a reaction. Skin sensitivity sometimes occurs, along with minimal bruising and skin can be slightly red and tight feeling. In a few short hours, these slight side effects will dissipate. Other side effects can be tiny skin abrasions and small bleeding spots. Anaesthetics are not necessary with microdermabrasion, no dangerous chemicals are involved on the sensitive skin on your face, and there are minimal risks involved. This process is much easier on the skin and safer than facial peels that involve chemicals or lasers.
